Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Mathias B. 'Math' Klaphake, 84, who died Tuesday at Albany Area Hospital. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. today at Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Melrose, and one hour before services Friday at the church in New Munich. Parish prayers will be 7 tonight at the funeral home followed by St. Joseph's Society, Catholic Aid Society and Catholic Order of Foresters at 8.
Mathias Klaphake was born in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, to Fred and Veronica (Kersting) Klaphake. He married Clara Toenies on Oct. 27, 1936, in St. Rosa. The couple farmed in St. Martin Township until moving to New Munich in 1983. She died April 4, 1991. He married Rita Ostendorf on Sept. 10, 1993, in Long Prairie. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Men's Society, Catholic Aid Society and Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a former member of the Freeport Co-op Creamery Board and St. Martin Township Board.
Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons, Sharon Gamradt of Sauk Centre, Shirley Worms and Harold of New Munich, Florian of Melrose, Eugene of Blaine, James of Cold Spring, Kenneth and Steven of Freeport, and Thomas of Sauk Rapids; brother, Frank of Melrose; 36 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; and stepchildren, Donald Ostendorf of Zimmerman, Kathleen Dempsey and Jim Ostendorf of Long Prairie, Dianna Werlinger of Hopkins, David Ostendorf of Maple Grove, Leonard Ostendorf of Moorhead, and Debbie Bosl of Sauk Centre.
He was preceded in death by his sister and brothers, Magdalene Wiener, William, Lawrence and Theodore.
