Roman A. Schulzetenberg, age 87, of Melrose died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 21, at St. Marys Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vince Lieser and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Burial followed in the parish cemetery, with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.
Roman Schulzetenberg was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Alberta, Canada, to Bernard and Rose (Welle) Schulzetenberg. He was united in marriage to Lydia Marthaler on Oct. 14, 1947, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Guam during World War II. He co-owned and operated Schulzetenbergs Our Own Hardware in Melrose for over 40 years. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, St. Leos Court Catholic Order of Foresters in New Munich, American Legion Post 101, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. Roman enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, traveling and spending time with his family.
Roman is survived by his wife, Lydia of Melrose; children, Jim Schulzetenberg and his wife, Anita Gille of Duluth, Joyce Grong and her husband, Steve of Gary, S.D., Renee Marchel and her husband, Bill of Brainerd, and Lea Borgerding and her husband, Neal of Freeport; 10 grandchildren, Mara Mijal, Ben, Will, and Paul Schulzetenberg, Evan, Aron, and Tyler Grong, Courtney, Austin, and Alex Borgerding; brothers, Urban Schulzetenberg and his wife, Marion of Melrose, Edwin Schulzetenberg and his wife, Lorraine of Melrose, Joe Schulzetenberg and his wife, Jean of Freeport; sisters, Verena Theilen of Melrose, Evelyn Cook and her husband, Ken of Bellevue, Wash., Frances Berscheit and her husband, Joe of Melrose, Doris Braegelmann and her husband, Cyril of Annandale, Va., and Alice Mayers and her husband, Al of Eagan.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Caroline Mareck and Rita Hinnenkamp. Serving as casket bearers were Evan Grong, Aron Grong, Tyler Grong, Ben Schulzetenberg, Will Schulzetenberg, and Austin Borgerding. Serving as cross bearer was Courtney Borgerding and scripture bearer was Alex Borgerding. Plumbing symbol presenter was Paul Schulzetenberg. Honorary bearers were Ray Maus, Frank Maleska, Gilbert Klaphake, Hermie Westendorf, Gene Olmscheid, Dick Egan, Fran Hertzog, Clarence Wenker, Alvin Lieser and Earl Wiehoff. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Marys Catholic Church in Melrose. Arrangements were made with Patton Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.
