Dade City resident Jeanette T. Barthle has been named the 1990 Woman of the Year in Agriculture by the state commissioner of agriculture.

Barthle was nominated by the Florida CattleWomen's Association and was chosen for the sixth annual award by a panel of judges.

"I am deeply honored by the award," says Barthle. In addition to rearing four sons and three daughters with her husband, Pasco County rancher J.W. "Joe" Barthle, she has been active in a variety of organizations at the county, state and national level, including president of the American National CattleWomen's Association.

Barthle has been an active leader in 4-H, a Future Farmers of America mother and organizer of Pasco County rodeos. She helped create the first Florida Beef Cook-Off in 1978, which has become a major beef promotion event in the state.

She served on the Florida Beef Council and, while president of Florida CowBelles, helped start the first "Know Your Beef" course at the University of Florida.

Barthle became a regional editor for the Independent Farmer and Rancher, now The Record, a weekly agricultural publication, and is writing a book about the adventures of a Florida ranch family.

"Agriculture women are doing much more than staying home and taking care of the house and helping out on the ranch or farm," Barthle said. "They are getting involved in activities off the farm."

This year's award will be presented at the opening day luncheon of the Florida State Fair in Tampa on Feb. 6.
