Bernice Herzog, age 82 of Watertown, S.D., passed away on Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, in Watertown. The funeral Mass was at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Immaculate Conception Church with Father James Bream officiating. Music was furnished by the Immaculate Conception Church Choir. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Watertown.
Bernice Veronica Herzog, the daughter of Ignatious and Anna (Korte) Butkowski was born on Oct. 21, 1924, at St. Rosa. On Nov. 10, 1942, she married Hubert G. "Hub" Herzog at St. Rosa and the couple farmed the family farm near Melrose. They moved to Wadena in 1950, where they started a roofing business. The family moved to Watertown in 1968, when they established 81 Roofing. They retired in 1985. Hub Herzog passed away on Nov. 10, 1998. Bernice was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She enjoyed reading, traveling, crocheting, sewing, cooking, gardening and flowers. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Sharon (John) Zosel of Benson, Wayne (Mary) of Plover, Wis., Nan (Dwight) Magee of Watertown, Lila (Art) Madden of Scottsdale, Ariz., Debby (Gordon) Meeker of Sioux Falls, S.D., Cliff (Donna), Cindy (Pat) Murphy and Roxanne (Brad) Schmeling, all of Watertown, Mary Ann (Roger) Lindquist of Phoenix, Ariz., Loren (Roxanne) of Watertown; Tammy (Mark) Voegele of Littleton, Colo.; her son-in-law, Marlo Brandriet of Watertown; 28 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Olivia Beste of Cold Spring, Roger Butkowski of St. Rosa, Lucille Stanek of Minneapolis, Marvin Butkowski of Wayzata, Dorothy Weller of Brooton, LaVerne Fleischhacker of St. Paul, Annette Hollenkamp of St. Rosa, Melvin Butkowski of St. Joseph, and Raymond Butkowski of St. Rosa; and Bernice's daily companion, a parakeet named George.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Linda (Marlo) Brandriet; and two brothers, Jerome and Florian Butkowski. Casketbearers were Jeff Zosel, Shawn Herzog, Troy Bramer, Tony Madden, Eric Brandriet, Kelly Meeker, Cory Herzog, Curt Schmeling, Ben Lindquist, Jacob Voegele.
