Lillian Essler, age 69, of Winthrop, Minn., passed away on Jan. 11, 2005, at her home in Winthrop, following a courageous battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 14, 2005, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Winthrop. Father Ronald Huberty officiated with interment was in the Winthrop Cemetery.

Lillian "Lil" Elizabeth (Olberding) Essler was born June 18, 1935, in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, (New Munich), Minn. She was the daughter of Frank and Mary (Thull) Olberding. Lil worked at Sauk Centre Hospital as a nurse's aid for several years. She was united in marriage with James Essler on Sept. 1, 1954, in Greenwald, Minn. This union was blessed with three children. The couple lived in the twin cities area for 11 years and Lil did various jobs including apartment caretaker, waitressing and home day care. The couple moved to Winthrop in 1965, and worked in the family business for 28 years. They moved to Cold Spring for five years and Lil worked at Wooden Hearts Craft Store until 1998, when they moved back to Winthrop. Lil worked at Hands Inc., in Winthrop from 1999 until she retired. Lil and Jim celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past year surrounded by family. Lil was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, in Winthrop. She loved spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was honored by winning a trip to the Pillsbury Bake-off contest. Her recipe was featured in a Pillsbury cookbook. Lil also enjoyed traveling, camping, playing cards, yard work and motorcycling trips. She was self-taught and talented at sewing, crocheting, quilting and woodworking crafts.

Lil is survived by her husband, James Essler of Winthrop; daughters, Diane (Tom) Rannow of Winthrop, and Carol Essler of North Mankato; six grandchildren, Michelle (Steve) Tragner; Melanie Rannow; Melissa (Mike) McKirahan; Candice (Glenn) Peters; Jesse (Jodi) Buche and Jent Buche; four great-grandchildren, Skylar and Caitlyn McKirahan; Rylan Rannow and Caidyn Peters; brothers, Fridolin (Lucy) Olberding of Overland Park, KS and George (Ruth) Olberding and his wife, Ruth of Apple Valley; sister, Angeline (Wayne) Meyer of Sauk Centre; sisters-in-law, Angeline Olberding of St. Cloud, Bea Olberding of Oregon; Cleone Essler of Sauk Centre, and Rosie Rezencheck of Willmar, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Lil is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Olberding; son, Rodney Essler on May 1, 1997; grandson, Justin Buche; brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Hilda Olberding and brothers, Arthur Olberding and Edmund Olberding. The organist was Thelma Nierengarten and casket bearers were Mike McKirahan, Steve Tragner, Glenn Peters, Jesse Buche, Jent Buche, and Peter Kulzer.
