John Berling
John Berling, 73, Waite Park died Monday, April 21, 2008. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of John Berling, was at 4 p.m., Friday, April 25, at Christ Church Newman Center on the campus of St. Cloud State University. Internment was at the Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud.
John was born in Melrose, on June 26, 1934, to Joseph and Anna (Holdvogt) Berling. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1952 and from St. Cloud State University in 1957. He married Patricia Ehlen on Feb. 23, 1957, in Wadena. He started his teaching career at Holdingford High School, followed by five years in Staples. During that time he completed work on a Master's Degree in Library Science at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. He worked briefly at St. Cloud State before joining the faculty at Apollo High School in St. Cloud, as the library/media director. In 1968 he returned to St Cloud State and worked in Learning Resources and the Center for Information Media. He completed his doctorate at the University of Nebraska in 1975 and later served as the Dean of Learning Resources and the Technology Services for 20 years. He retired from that position in 1997 and continued working on a part-time basis for three years seeing the new James W. Miller Learning Resource Center through its planning and construction. Throughout his career he held leadership positions and committee assignments at local, state and national levels in numerous educational and professional organizations. John was known for his dedication to and continued support of St. Cloud State University. John will be remembered for his love of family, his friendly nature and his enthusiasm for life. He enjoyed reading, writing, sports, travel and music, but especially the Berling lake cabin in northern Minnesota where he loved taking family and friends. During retirement golf was high on his list of entertainment as was traveling with friends to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in the winter.
Survivors include his sons, Daniel (Sandra) of St. Cloud, Brian (Ann) of Green Bay, and Philip (Pamela) of Edina; eight grandchildren; three great-grandsons; two sisters, Mildred Poepping and Rita Meyer; brother, Henry. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gregory; sister, Josina Friederichs.
