Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond for Rosalia M. Backes, age 99, who died Saturday at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday and from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond. Parish prayers will be at 4 p.m., and Golden Smiles, Christian Women and the Catholic Order of Foresters will pray a rosary at 4:30 p.m.
Rosalia was born in Richmond to Joseph and Margaret (Weber) Becker. She married Alois J. Backes on June 5, 1934, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Richmond. Rosalia was a U.S. Postal worker for 25 years before retiring in 1972. She was a Minnesota Twins fan, an avid reader and she enjoyed quilting and gardening. Rosalia was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Christian Women and she was a charter member of the Richmond Womens Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include her son, Jerry (Marcey) Backes of New Richmond, Wis.; her daughter, Elaine (Elmer) Willenbring of Richmond; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alois , in 1974; brother, Leo Becker; sister, Lindy Erkens; and foster brother, Ambrose Niehaus.
