Johann Peter Fuchs

(June 4, 1830 - June 23, 1901)

Johann Peter Fuchs (John P. Fox), the youngest and 13th child of Johann Fuchs and Anna Maria Schueller, was born June 4, 1830, in the village of Langenfeld, Kreis Adenau, Province of the Rhine, Prussia, and baptized on the same day at St. Quirinus Catholic church, Langenfeld. Peter Gross, his brother-in-law, and Maria Mueller, both of Langenfeld, served as sponsors.

About the time of his 10th birhtday his parents and brothers (Anton, Mathias, Johann Joseph, Paul and Peter Joseph Fuchs) emigrated, and made their way to the Port of LeHavre, France, where they boarded a sailing vessel bound for the Port of New York. Arriving on October 1, 1840, they traveled to Buffalo, New York, and spent the winter months. And during the following spring, they made their way to Mighigan, arriving in Westphalia, Clinton count, Michigan on May 29, 1841. Nine years later, when the 1850 Federal Population census was taken, Johann Peter Fuchs was recorded twice. Once on his brother's (Anton Fuchs) farm in Westphalia township, Clinton County, Michigan, and again with Johann Peter Schneider and Elisabeth Gross, his first cousin, in Lyons township, Ionia county, Michigan. At the latter residence his occupation was listed as potash boiler.

Approximately one year later, and two days before his 21st birthday, he married Catharina Martin, whose father (Conrad Martin) had arrived in Westphalia, Michigan with his wife and 6 children on February 20, 1839, on June 2, 1851 at Saint Mary's Catholic church, Westphalia, Michigan. Peter Joseph Fuchs, his brother, and Franz Martin served as sponsors. Six children (Carl Joseph, Maria Amelia, Franz, Anton, Barbara and Joseph Fuchs/Fox) were born to the 15 year union. On August 6, 1866 Catharina Martin died and was buried in Saint Mary's cemetary, Westphalia, Michigan.

Nine months later, Johann Peter Fuchs (John P. Fox), married for the second time to Elisabeth Schaefer/Schafer, thirteen years his junior and whose parents emigrated from Langenfled parish, on May 14, 1867, Saint Mary's Catholic church, Westphalia, Michigan. And during their 34 years together, 11 children were born.

Johann Peter Fuchs' first acquisition of farm land was on December 4, 1848, when he purchased the West half of the East half of the South West quarter of Section 34, town 7 North of Range four West, containing forty acres of land, from William Barton and his wife (Therina), for $200. He must have purchased an additional 20 acres of land by 1864, since the Michigan State census of that year mentioned that he owned 60 taxable acres, of which 45 were improved.
