Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Adelbert E. 'Bert'Blonigen, age 68, of St. Cloud, who died Saturday. His brother Rev. Aloysius Blonigen,CMM, and Reverend Gregory Lieser will officiate. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery in St. Cloud. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Knights of Columbus Council #5548 will pray a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by parish prayers at 7 at the funeral home in St. Cloud. Arrangements were by the Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
Adelbert Blonigen was born on October 3, 1932, in Paynesville, Minnesota, to Herman and Magdalena (Fuchs) Blonigen. He grew up on a farm in St. Martin, Minnesota, where he played baritone in a family band called the Harmony Knights with his three teenage brothers. A fan of Whoopee John, he also played for the St. Martin Band beginning in his teenage years and again later in life before it disbanded in the early 1990's. He married Viola Loehlein on September 5, 1970, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. He also played in the U.S. Army Band while serving from 1954 to 1957, stationed in France. He was a census taker for the 1960 census in Stearns County and was employed at the Stearns County Treasurer's Office from 1961 until he retired in 1992.
Bert was known for his love of genealogy and his amazing recall of genealogical facts. He was a member of St. Peter's Parish where he was an usher. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council #5548, Waite Park American Legion Silver Star Post #428, St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622 and the Stearns County Historical Society.
Survivors include his wife, Viola of St. Cloud; children, Florian of Pullman, WA, Lisa of Minneapolis, Brian and his wife Carrie of Milwaukee, WI, and Daniel of Minneapolis; brothers and sisters, Alverna Loehlein of Roseville, Reverend Aloysius, CMM of Dearborn Heights, MI, Gerald of St. Stephen, Victor of Waite Park, Cecilia Bentler of Glenwood, Jeanette Clancy of Avon, and Evelyn Guggisberg of Starbuck.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant brothers, Florian and Leroy.
