Robert James Hormuth

(July 20, 1937 - January 4, 2010)

HORMUTH, Robert James, "Bob," 72, of Dade City, Fla., passed away
Monday, January 4, 2010, at Florida Hospital Zephyr-hills. The most important thing in his life was his family, especially Alice, his wife of 51 years, as she was the love of his life. Bob helped form the Police Athletic League in Pasco County, and coached PAL football for 10 years, winning championships in seven of those years. He also refereed for PAL football, high school football, and umpired for Dade City Little League. One of his jobs found him mentoring handicapped men for a number of years. He was a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association. A longtime and very active member of St. Rita Catholic Church, he served as a eucharistic minister, offering communion in nursing homes, hospitals, and at Gulfside Regional Hospice at the Edwinola, as well as giving support and prayers to patients and families at these institutions. Each year, he and his wife volunteered at the Kumquat Festival, the Pasco County Fair, Sparklebration, and the Bug Jam. Recently he said, "We believe that if we take something from a community, we also need to give back to it." With pride, Alice and Bob were foster parents to five children of abusive families, while raising three daughters and a son of their own, and from all accounts, were wonderful parents.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Alice; three daughters, Kathy (Dave) Britton, Karen (Alan) Gordon and Kimberly (Mike) Riley; a son, Randy Hormuth; three sisters, Sylvia (Mickey) Crelitz, Linda (Jimmy) Gant and Mary (Bruce) Scheurman; his mother-in-law, Nettie Gude; his sister-in-law, Bobby Lou Hormuth; 10 grandchildren, Doug Britton and Trina Britton, Robbie (Alissa) Gordon, David (Chelsea) Gordon, Kristopher Gordon, Justin Reedy, Jeremy (Debbie) Reedy, Heather Reedy, Kaitlynn Hormuth and Kacie Hormuth; six great-grand-children, Doug Britton, Nina Britton, Liam Britton, Hailey Reedy, Noah Gordon and Dawson Gordon; many nieces and nephews; and faithful companion, Jake.

He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Borgia Hormuth; a brother, Donald Hormuth; and a nephew, Ralph Hormuth. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the 5th Street Chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010, at St. Rita Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Floral Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Rita Catholic Church, Dade City.
