The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Carl H. Backes, age 79, will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Duelm. Burial will be Friday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Carl died on Saturday, with his family at his side, at his home in Sauk Rapids. A visitation will be from 4-9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud and also from 10:00 until the time of service Thursday at the church. St. Patrick's parish prayers will be at 5:00 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus will pray at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in St. Cloud.
Carl was born April 25, 1923 in Richmond to Joseph and Secunda (Hansen) Backes. He married Dorothy Peterson on April 10, 1944. In June of 1944, he entered the U. S. Army and served in Central Europe. His tour of duty kept him away from home, and he did not see his first born daughter until she was 6 months old. In 1947, the Backes family moved to their farm in Sauk Rapids where Carl farmed the rest of his life.
Carl was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Foley Knights of Columbus, Foley American Legion Post #298, American Guernsey Club, American Dairy Association, Minnesota Thoroughbred Association and the St. Cloud Tech Alumni.
Carl is survived by his wife, Dorothy, Sauk Rapids; daughter, Konie (Norm Jestus) Slipy-Jestus, St. Cloud; sons, Carl (Wendy) Backes, Columbus, OH, Thomas (Jackie) Backes, Joplin, MS, and Richard (Miki) Backes, Sauk Rapids. He is also survived by his brothers, Alfred (Donat) Backes, Cold Spring, David (Margaret) Backes, Dassel, Joseph (Marie) Backes, Big Island, Excelsior, MN; sister, Marilyn (Dick) Holden, Silver Spring, MD; 9 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Pierre, Robert and James.
