Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 18, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Sartell, MN, for John B. Beuning who passed away Friday at his home. Friends may call from 4 until 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Williams Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Monday morning at the Church. Parish prayers will be said at 5 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.

John B. Beuning was born on September 10, 1904, in Millwood Township, Stearns County, MN, to William and Bernadina (Pieper) Beuning. John married Hazel Scott in Minneapolis in 1928. She died in 1946. John married H. Maureen Merrigan at St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Cloud, in 1947. He attended St. John's Prep school, and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School. He did post-graduate study in surgery at Harvard University's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. John practiced medicine in Albany, MN from 1928 to 1938, general surgery in St. Cloud from 1938 to 1976, and served a number of terms as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at the St. Cloud Hospital. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons and was past president of the Steams- Benton Medical Society. After retirement John worked part-time for the Minnesota State Health Department from 1976 to 1981 and was a member of the St. Cloud Retired Physicians Group. He was a member of the University of Minnesota ROTC Rifle Team, an Endowment Member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the Minnesota Trapshooting Hall of Fame, past president of the Minnesota State Trapshooting Association, co-founder and first president of the Central Minnesota Gun Club and a member of the Minnesota Deer Hunter's Association. John was a NRA-certified rifle coach and coached for the Junior Olympic Trapshooting program in Minnesota and North Dakota, as well as for the St. Cloud State University rifle and trapshooting classes and the SCSU trapshooting team. John was a licensed private pilot and served as a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

John is survived by his wife, Maureen; sons, Richard John "Jack" (Mercedes), Andover; James A. (Vi), Mahnomen; Thomas B. (Sondra), St. Cloud; and Maurice A. "Tony" (Nancy) and Stephen I. (Lisa), Brooklyn Park, MN; by daughters, Sheila Beuning Holt (Andrew) and Michelle J. Beuning, Shoreview, and Virginia J. "Gina" Beuning, St. Anthony, MN; and by 29 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by sons, Patrick J., Andrew B. and Willard J. "Bill" Beuning; by daughter, Mary Catherine Beuning; by brothers, Henry, Ben, Herman, Joseph and George Beuning; and by sisters, Mary Beuning Vogel, Agnes Beuning Reller, and Elizabeth Beuning Ballman. Memorials are preferred to St. Cloud Hospital Hospice.
