Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2007 at St. Augustines Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Arlene M. Harren, age 69, of Sauk Rapids, who died peacefully at home on January 28, 2007. Reverend Luke Steiner, OSB will officiate. Entombment will take place in the Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum in St. Cloud. Relatives and friends may call from 4-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Parish Prayers will be at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday after 12 Noon at the church.
Arlene, the only child of Walter Wischnewski and Josephine Hadersbeck was born January 23, 1938 and spent her entire life in the St. Cloud area. Arlene attended Cathedral High School and St. Cloud State where she graduated with a B.S. degree in elementary education and an art minor. She worked as a third grade teacher, an elementary art teacher, student teacher supervisor and finally as Title I reading instructor in Sauk Rapids.
Arlene married Art Harren on June 23, 1962 at St. Augustines Catholic Church. Art was a building contractor in the St. Cloud area, where they both became active in the Central Minnesota Builders Association. Arlene was the first woman on the board of directors and was the only woman to hold the position of president in 35 years (1992). She was involved with the Associations scholarship program for more than 20 years. On the state level Arlene was on the board of directors, worked on setting up testing for builders licensing and served on the state Builders Advisory Council, appointed by the Commissioner of Commerce. Arlene and Art shared many hobbies and enjoyed traveling, canoeing in the Boundary Waters and playing cards, especially bridge which she played for master points in the American Bridge League. She was a regional master player. Arlene and Art also shared a commitment to volunteer work food shelf, Meals on Wheels, Christmas food baskets and planted and maintained two church gardens for the past eight years. Arlene scheduled and trained lectors at St. Augustine's and sang in the church choir for thirty-eight years.
Arlene is survived by her husband Art, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and special neighbors Spencer, Dominic and Hunter Austing who she treated like grandchildren. Memorials are preferred to Central Minnesota Builders Association Scholarship Fund for students in the building trades at St. Cloud Technical College.
