Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery, with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Freeport.
Richard (Bud) Joseph Hiltner was born April 20, 1925, to Leo and Margaret (Harren) Hiltner. He attended Sacred Heart School in Freeport and Melrose High School. Bud served with the U.S. Army for six years, having taken part in the Normandy invasion in World War II. After completing his tour of duty in the occupation army in Germany, he was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked in various occupations in the twin city area until his retirement when he made his home in Melrose. In 1994, Bud went to live at Mother Lucille Assisted Living Home in Richmond, until he checked into the Veterans Hospital in Saint Cloud, where he died on October 15, 2001. Bud was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Freeport, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 in Melrose.
Survivors include sisters and brother, Mary Goebel of Freeport, Louise Hemker of Hopkins, Elizabeth Carota and her husband, Harold of Arroya Grande, CA, Lee Hiltner and his wife, Midge of Maple Grove, and Sister Marius Hiltner, OSB of Luxemburg. He was preceded in death by his parents. Arrangements are with Patton-Schad Funeral Service of Freeport.
