Leonard Peter Schmitz Leonard Peter Schmitz, 80, of Brooten, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at Belgrade Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at St. Donatus Catholic Church in Brooten. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Leonard was born on Dec. 17, 1926, in St. Martin, the son of George and Matilda (Hemmesh) Schmitz. He was raised on the farm and attended country school. In 1950, he moved to Brooten. Leonard served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in October of 1954. He received the following medals: Korean Service Medal with Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
On July 2, 1957, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Oevermann at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Along with his brother, Martin, Leonard and Dorothy moved to North Fork Township and they started Schmitz Farms. They farmed from July 1957 until 1994 when Leonard and Dorothy moved into Brooten. In June of 2004, he became a resident of Belgrade Nursing Home. Leonard was a member of VFW Post #1825 in Belgrade. Leonard was baptized on Dec. 18, 1926, at St. Martin's Catholic Church and was a member of St. Donatus Catholic Church where he was an usher. He loved to dance, spend time in the woods with the chain saw and visit with his many friends and family members. Leonard often would stop by his children's homes just to see what the kids and grandkids were doing. He was a farmer at heart, attending farm auctions and talking about farming until his last day.
