Melvin was born May 25, 1922, in Melrose, MN to Theodore and Christine (Schlicht) Schurman. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He married Florence Klein on July 25, 1945, at the Church of Immmaculate Conception in Osakis. They divorced in 1986. Along with Florence, he founded, owned and operated the Cold Spring Bakery from 1946 to 1986. In 1986, his sons, Dale and Brian, took over ownership of the bakery. He was a former member of the Cold Spring Chamber, Knights of Columbus, the Advisory Board of the East Central Regional Service Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Minnesota Bakers Association and a director of the Retail Bakers of America. When he retired, he worked at a number of part time jobs in the St. Cloud area until he was 78 years old. Throughout his life he was known for his generous donation of his family's bakery products. His work was his life; his family was his pride and possession. His comments were "Everything is perfect" and "No problem", but his health deteriorated quickly the last year.

Now he is at rest.

He is survived by his children, Charlotte (Bernie) Lommel, St. Cloud, Carol Bauer, Brooklyn Center, Dale (Lynn) Schurman, Cold Spring, and Brian (Tracy) Schurman, Cold Spring; grandchildren, Annie, Jason, and Maria Lommel, Kimberly Bauer, Doug, Andria, Mark, Ariana and Elijah Schurman; great-grandchildren, Rachel Bauer, Alec and Michael Lommel; sisters, Helen Harth, Watkins, Loretta Benson, Northwood, ND, and Jeanette Kleinschmidt, Sauk Centre. He is also survived by his special friend, Mary (Augie) Lyth, Salt Lake City, UT.

His classmates from Melrose Class of 1940 will serve as honorary pallbearers: Ray Braun, Vern Fern, Clyde Tise, Lois Schanhaar, Ed Niehaus, Dave Bergman, Bob Wagner, Lou Mechavich, Jake Weber, Ester Botz, and Lee Lengas.

He was peceded in death by his parents, first wife, Florence (1994); sister, Vi; brother, Tubby; and son Allen (1956).

A special thank you and appreciation to his daughter Char, our sister and a nurse who worked tirelessly alongside the doctors, nurses and others in charge to assure he had the best care and see that the last remaining days with us he was as comfortable as possible. He died in "perfect" peace among family and friends.
