Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, North Prairie, for Celestine M. 'Sal'Zwilling, 81, who died Friday at his home. Burial with full military honors provided by St. Cloud VFW Post 428 will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 tonight at Williams Funeral Home, St. Cloud, and after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church in North Prairie. Parish prayers by St. Anthony's Church, St. Cloud, will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home in St. Cloud.
Celestine Zwilling was born in Collegeville to Nicholas and Clara (Fruth) Zwilling. He married Marie Frericks on June 2, 1942, in Bryan, Texas. The couple farmed in Bowlus from 1958 to 1979. He also was employed as a mechanic at Eich Motor Co. from 1950 to 1965, then worked for the Royal-Melrose Granite Co., St. Cloud, from 1965 to 1979. From 1979 to 1992, he worked in maintenance at St. Benedict's Center until retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II stationed in India, a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, North Prairie, and a current member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his children, Irene Kucala of Waite Park, Richard of Sauk Rapids, Kathleen Burdick, Dennis, Carol Williams and Robert of St. Cloud, Virgil of Bowlus, Daniel of St. Paul, Anette Bieniek of Monticello, and Patrick of Sauk Centre; 33 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Middendorf of Freeport, Margaret Hoeschen of Watkins, Sister Marie Zwilling, OSB, of St. Joseph, and Theresa Lampert of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 27, 1994; son and daughter, JoAnn Martin and Roger; and brothers and sisters, Joe, Al, Mathias, John, Frances Stiechen and Sister Berchmans Zwilling, OSB.
Memorials are preferred.
