Death
He was killed while excavating tunnels 16 feet underneath Buchanan Street, as part of the building works for the Glasgow City and District Railway, which opened in 15 March 1886. This was the first section of underground railway in Glasgow, predating the more famous Glasgow Subway by a decade.Endnotes
