Merchant Navy motor tanker the M.V. ''Clea'' was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-96 on 13 February 1941 in the North Atlantic, with the loss of all 59 hands including Third Officer John Oswald Stainthorp, aged 26. U-96 was the inspiration for author Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel ''Das Boot'' and the subsequent film.Endnotes
