After the Battle of Hong Kong, Mr. Stroud was incarcerated at North Point camp in Hong Kong, Sham Shui Po in Kowloon on the mainland, and Camp 5-B in Niigata, Japan. While a POW in Hong Kong, "Big John" as he was known in his unit, was assisted by doctors and orderlies in Sick Bay. He bluntly credits his survival to "the dropping of the Atomic bombs." Soon after - while he was "unloading coal off ships at harbour" - he learned the war was over and he would be going home.
