Listed in the 1901 Census are John 23, wife Annie B 23, and children John W. 3, Florence E. 2, and Herbert J. 4 months.Census

The story is that she left John Coles for his best friend back in England, believed to be Ted Irwin. It is unclear if youngest son Edward Charles died or was taken. It is unknown if Edward was a son of John Coles or Ted Irwin. Florence recalled to Brian J. Smith that John hired detectives to track her down, unsuccessfully.Immigration

In the 1921 Census only John 44 and son John 25 are listed at 86 Highfield Rd. However daughters Beatrice 18 and Winnifred 15 are listed on the same page at 102 Highfield Rd in the William Dickinson household.Census
John is listed again in the 1921 Census in Wiarton. He and Lizzie Kibbler Smith just wed. There was John 42 and new wife Lizzie 42, Maurice Smith 22 son-in-law and Florence Smith (nee Coles) 22 daughter, Earle Smith 19 step-son, and Beatrice Coles 18 daughter listed at 44 Frank St in Wiarton.Residence
