(18 Sep 1809 - 17 Aug 1890)

Per Helen Thompson:
Obituary Hannah Roberts died 17 Aug 1890. The Burra Record, 29 Aug 1890 : "Mrs Thomas Roberts, an old Burra resident died at her daughter’sreside nce at Narridy [near Crystal Brook]. She arrived in SA with her husband , three sons and two daughters in June 1839 on the Sir Charles Forbes. He r husband was the first captain of the Burra Burra Mine and died at Golde n Grove in 1856. She is survived by six sons, three daughters, 79 grandch ildren and 43 great grandchildren. Mr Sampson Webb of Steelton is a broth er and Mrs James Harris of Burra is a sister". http://www.burrahistory.in fo/BurraPioneers.htm According to the booklet Family history of Thomas an d Hannah Roberts (nee Webb) "Thomas Roberts and his wife Hannah and fiv e children arrived in South Australia on the "Sir Charles Forbes" in June , 1839... Hannah (nee Webb) his wife, was from Penzance, and it is presum ed their marriage took place there. It it believed that Thomas at 16 year s of age, went to Penzance to work as a miner". However, on the record s I have found Hannah was born at Kenwyn not Penzance, and they were no t married in Penzance [which is near Falmouth in Cornwall], but in Kenwy n [which is near Truro in Cornwall]. Perranarworthal (where Thomas Robert s was born) is in between these two places, so it appears that he may hav e gone in the other direction [towards Truro] with his mining work, rathe r than to the Penzanze area. According to the webpage http://au.geocities .com/ttg_historical_society/robertsfamily.html, "Roberts had worked under ground in the Greenwich mine, a few miles south of Truro in Cornwall". Pe r another webpage http://www.teatreegully.sa.gov.au/page?pg=1869, "Thoma s was a Cornish miner who was engaged by the South Australian Mining Asso ciation to open up mineral sections along the River Torrens. Thomas had w orked at the Greenwith mine, 5 miles south of Truro in Cornwall, before a rriving in South Australia in June of 1839. He named hisnew property Gree nwith Farm." Per Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwith,_South_ Australia , "Greenwith was named by Thomas Roberts in 1846, who had bee n engaged by the South Australian Mining Association to open up mineral s ections along the River Torrens. He named his property Greenwith Farm aft er the mine at which he worked near Truro, Cornwall. " On daughter Hanna h Roberts baptism transcription record in the parishof Perranarworthal o n the Cornwall OPC database their residence is listed as "Greenwith Commo n", and Thomas' profession is listed as Miner. For a description of Perra narworthal in 1838: http://cornovia.org.uk/htexts/moule/moule_2_kerrier_h undred.html "PERRAN ARWORTHALL, 4 miles N. from Penryn, and 5 miles S.W . from Truro, contains 243 houses and 1362 inhabitants, including Perra n well and Perran cove. The church, dedicated to St. Piran, the patron o f tanners, is a curacy to St. Stithian's. Greenwith common is in this par ish.
