William was born in Australia, as was his brother Charles. Their parent s (Charles Smillie and Mary Hannah) emigrated from Kirkintilloch (I think ) to Australia leaving their daughter Agnes behind. Agnes married Archiba ld Lee and seemingly ended her days in Ireland. Charles (the father) drow ned in the Yarra River near Melbourne - he was a gold miner - and so Mar y Hannah returned, a widow, to Scotland with her two young boys .
Miriam does not exist and is, in fact, Marion, a miswrite in the census i s responsible for this. William and his wife had 11 children all in, I be lieve, and four died in infancy. Their son, William, born in 1906, died i n Australia in 1930, but I don't know anything other than that about hi s reasons for going or circumstances of death.
