Individual Details
Samuel Bankier
(16 Apr 1794 - 1841)
I ordered a copy of Weavers, Miners and the Open Book - A History of Kils yth by James Hutchison.
In chapter 18 Page 122 he says -
"James Marshall of Auchinstarry began work at Strone in 1824 but he recal ls even earlier coal workings in the area. On one such occasion water flo oded these pit workings, drowning 5 workers named Bankier, two brothers a nd there three sons."
Pity he doesn't say what the names of the Bankiers were - that would be t oo simple.
I went looking and found a newspaper article which may be the same incide nt albeit 1837.
22 May 1837
On Monday about 12 o'clock, a very melancholy occurrence took place a t a coal-pit near Kilsyth. Four industrious individuals, all relatives, o f the name of Bankier, formerly weavers, but lately colliers, while worki ng together, unfortunately came in contact with an old pit, full of water , which burst in upon them. A few others in the pit made their escape, bu t the four unfortunate men were caught by the rush of water, and must hav e instantly perished. [Caledonian Mercury 29 May 1837]

Now my theory is that one of the fathers was:
Samuel, husband of Mary Leishman who wasn't in the 1841 Census. He ha d 2 sons William b 1823 and James b 1829 that I haven't been able to fin d anything on.
BIRTH: Also shown as Born Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
BIRTH RITE: Also shown as Christening Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
DEATH: Also shown as Died Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
