Andrew Crawford
(19 Jul 1815 - 13 Jun 1900)
Andrew Crawford (1821 – 1900) was born in
Renfrew on 19 July 1815. He married Mary Dougery on
8 November 1839. Mary was born in Renfrew in 1819.
The 1841 Census records a number of Renfrew families
with surname Dougery. Mary’s parents William and
Agnes Dougery age 50 were born in Ireland as was
Mary’s elder brother John (in Donegal). They also lived
in High St Renfrew. There are four children recorded in
1841. Their son James at 15 was also a Cotton Hand
Loom Weaver. Another William age 20 with Janet 30
lived at Blythswood, possibly Andrew Crawford was
also working there as a Labourer. The census lists other
Cotton Hand Loom Weavers and also a power loom
weaver.
The spelling Du Grey came from family records in a
note that the family were of French Huguenot
background (so far no evidence for this), from Mary
Crawford (1845 ) to Catherine Crawford (1885) passed
on to Mena Pearson (1924).
The Hugenuet were attracted to Renfrew via Ireland
because of the work available. Renfrew was a centre for
processing cotton brought from America, initially by
hand looms, then processed in factories powered by
water mills and later by steam. Cloth was processed
using hand looms in the days of Andrew and Mary's
parents and grandparents in the late 18th century.
Andrew and Mary had five children: Margaret, Andrew
(1843), Mary (1845), William (1848), and Agnes
(1850). The 1841 census records Andrew as an
Agricultural labourer living in High St. In 1851 an
Agricultural Labourer living in 64 High St. In 1861 age
43, he was an agricultural labourer living at 13 Wilson
Street.
