Ephraim Edward Baker commanded the Mary Jane, a fishing boat displacing 10 tons. When coming up to Halifax with a load of fish on 17 December 1876 during a snow squall his ship struck Thrump Gap Shoal. In attempting to launch a small life boat in which to save themselves, the life boat was smashed alongside the Mary Jane and he drowned with Franklin Gould, one of his crewmen.His body was recovered on McNab Island and sent to East Jeddore for burial (Morning Herald, 21 Dec. 1876).
