Obituary of Robert Lance Hoffman

Hoffman, R.L. "Bob", 59 of Marion Va., died Thursday, January 28, 1999, in Smyth County Community Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of Alta Smith Hoffman and the late H.A. Hoffman, Jr. of Grant, Va. Mr. Hoffman retired in 1991 as a project engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation with more than 35 years of service. His early retirement from VDOT allowed him to achieve his life's desire and dream of becoming a full time cattle farmer on his family farmer in Grayson County.

He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 30 years where he served as an usher. He is survived by his loving mother, Alta Smith Hoffman of Grant, Va.; his caring wife of 41 years, Donna Barton Hoffman of Marion, Va.; two sons, Lance Hoffman and Donald Hoffman both of Marion, Va.; a granddaughter, Ashleigh O'Donna Hoffman; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles R. and Jean Hoffman of Raleigh, N.C.; several cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and scores of dear friends and neighbors also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 30, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Pollock officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow in Grant Cemetery in Grant, Va. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Cancer Research Fund, Medical Center Blvd. Winston Salem, N.C. 27157-1021 or The First United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, 115 South Church Street, Marion, Va. 24354. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is serving the Hoffman family.
