Obituary of John Thurston Wassom

John Thurston Wassom, 89, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2006, with his loving family by his side. Born October 23, 1916, in Abingdon, Va., he was the son of the late John Thurston Wassom and Nannie Bell Jackson Wassom.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Bell Wassom. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Betty Cornett Wassom. Also left to cherish his memory are his son, John T. Wassom Jr., and his wife, Ann; his daughter, Betty Champlin and her husband, Michael; his daughter, Sally Wassom; his two grandchildren, John Champlin and Katherine Wassom, all of Richmond; and special friends, Susan Light and Wes and Martha Waters.

He was a lifelong Methodist and a member of Bon Air United Methodist Church. He attended Bluefield College and the University of Richmond Law School. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar since 1941, and retired after 43 years in the insurance industry as Superintendent of Claims for the U.S. Fidelity & Guaranty Company.

He was a private pilot who flew his own and club aircraft for years. He also loved to travel, read, and drive and was a self-taught mechanic who restored a number of antique cars. He will be missed by those who knew him for his strength, wisdom, and humor, and his devotion to God and his family. The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2006, at Bon Air United Methodist Church.
