Church Arranges Organ Dedication

Memory of Cornelius Paulding, Philanthropist, to be Honored

The church organ in the Coliseum Place Baptist church, 1376 Camp street, will be dedicated formally Sunday at 11 a.mm. to the memory of the late Cornelius Paulding, philanthropist of Baltimore and New Orleans, whose will provided for the erection of the church.

The Rev. Shelton Gambrell Posey, pastor of the church, will deliver the dedication address, choosing as his subject the life of Mr. Paulding. Mrs. J. A. Durne, church organist, will play hymns.

In explaining plans for the dedication ceremony, the Rev. Mr. Posey stated that although 80 years have passed since the building of the church, the church records show that no recognition ever has been accorded to Mr. Paulding for his generosity.

"In 1812," he explained, "Cornelius Paulding, wealthy business man and a Baptist, came to New Orleans from Baltimore to engage in business.

"He made immediately available some space in one of his store buildings as a hall for Baptist services. He also arranged for itinerant Baptists preachers and missionaries to hold services there.

"Upon his death March 12, 1851 it was discovered that Mr. Paulding had provided in his will for the organization of another Baptist church, the First Baptist church having been organized prior to that time. The will provided that the property at the corner of St. Charles and Lafayette streets, the present site of the Lafayette hotel, be sold and the proceeds be used for the organization of a new church and the erection of a new house of worship.

"On July 3, 1854 the Coliseum Place baptist church was organized to satisfy the requirements of this legacy. The organization took place at Prytania street and Jackson avenue in the home of the late Dr. William C. Duncan, who later became the first pastor. The site at Camp and Terpsichore streets later was purchased, and the building which stands there now was erected.

"On February 7, 1934, members of the church passed appropriate resolutions authorizing the dedication of the pipe organ to Mr. Paulding's memory."
