Nathaniel McCLURE Sr.

NATHANIEL MCCLURE, [1712] son of Halbert and Agnes McClure, born about 1712. Wife, Mary [Harrelson]. Probably the same that settled first on Middle River of the Shenandoah, member of Captain John Christian's militia company 1742, and whose son, Alexander, was baptized by Rev. John Craig, March 10, 1749. In Rockbridge County, was a member of Capt. John Buchanan's militia company 1742. His farm (deeded 1747), was on Mill Creek, cor. Moses McClure. Was constable 1745; member Timber Ridge church 1753, signing the call for Rev. John Brown. He died 1760 and his wife Maey died 1767. For their wills see Chalkley, Vol. Ill, pp. 62 and 101. Ten children:
I.-Halbert McClure, [1738] born about 1740. Married Mary Henderson and died 1771. Three children,
Mary,
Isabella and
Phebe. See Chalkley, Vol. Ill, p. 122.
II. James McClure, [1739] was living in Rockbridge 1772. Is said to have emigrated to Georgia.
III. Nathaniel McClure, born about 1747. Was living in Rockbridge 1768.
IV. Dorothy McClure, [1744] probably married David Dryden. Sons,

Thomas.
V. Mary McClure, [1746] married Joseph Reed, of Rockbridge County.
VI. Hannah McClure,[1751] married John Smiley, of Rockbridge Co.
VII. Alexander McClure, born 1749, died about 1765.
VIII. Thomas McClure, born 1753. Botetourt County. Was in battle of Point Pleasant 1775 in Capt. John Murry's company. Probably emigrated to Mecklenburg County, N. C. See McClures in N. C.
IX. Margaret McClure, born 1757, married a Lee. Emigrated to the South.
X. Moses McClure, born 1760, Probably the Moses McClure 1790 in Mecklenburg County, N. C. See McClures in N. C.

Will
Will of Nathaniel McClure5th February 1761. Wife Mary; eldest son, Holbert, 10 pounds to cure his sore leg above his share; sons, James and Nathan (their young brother and sisters), Rest of children, viz: Halbert, Mary, Alexander, Hanah, Thomas, Margaret, Dorothy, Moses. Young sons to be put to trades. Executors, Alexander and Moses McClure and Archd. Alexander. Teste: David Dryden, Wm. Carleton, Hannah Allison. Proved, 19 May 1761 by Dryden and Carleton. Executors refuse. Administration granted widow Mary, who qualifies, with John Allison, Saml. McClure, Baptist McNabb. Mary's mark, Allison's mark, McNabb's mark.
7th January 1766. Articles of vendue (public auction) by Mary McClure, James, and Nathaniel McClure, for sale of the plantation on which they live, and sundry other moveables. The chattels, purchases under 10 shillings, ready money; above that, credit till 1st November, next. The plantation 30 pounds, cash, remainder in three payments. Purchaser required, if the stamp act is in force, to renew bonds. Subscribers to live on the place until May next.
Bill filed March 1769. Halbert McClure vs. Nathaniel McClure and James McClure. Nathaniel McClure Sr., father of orator, left by will plantation to James and Nathaniel McClure, his sons. Halbert was also a son. Widow was Mary. James McClure went to Georgia. Nathaniel McClure Sr. effects were set up at auction, at which time Nathaniel, Jr. was under age and James was of age.
