John worked as a blacksmith for 10 years and saved his money to buy a farm. In 1860, he and Martha purchased a 151 acre farm in Green Township within two miles of Kingston. In 1883 the family bought a 321 acre farm in Clark Co,, Illinois where they lived for 11 years. They eventually came home to Ross Co. for permanent residence, where they raised thoroughbred stock such as Poland-China hogs and Shorthorn cattle.
