Individual Details
Stephen DEAN
( - Sep 1634)
Stephen Dean was most likely born in Somersetshire, England which was a stronghold of Deanes. He arrived in America in 1621 aboard the Fortune which was the second ship to sail to the Plymouth colony. The ship's records list him as a miller bachelor and one of the "lusty yonge men."
He married Elizabeth the daughter of the Mary Ring, who came to Plymouth with the last group of separatists from Leyden, Holland before 1627. Stephen bought one acre of land from Philip Delanoy on which he built a house for himself and his new bride. After the children were born, he paid William Bradford 20 pounds for a house in the center of Plymouth village.
Stephen and Elizabeth had three daughters -- Elizabeth who married William Twiing, Miriam who married John Wing, and Susanna who first married Joseph Rogers and then Stephen Snow.
Stephen became one of the "purchasers" who bought the colony rights from the London adventurers in 1627. In the winter of 1632, the court gave him permission to build a grist mill with monopoly rights if he could handle all the colony's needs, but on condition that he charge no more than one pottle out of every bushel of ground grain. On March 24, 1633, he was one of a committee chosen to rate the colonists for taxes. Stephen died in September of 1634 and his widow Elizabeth married Josais Cooke the next year.
