Abstract of Pension Application
April 7, 1834
On the 7th day of April 1834 personally appeared in open court before the court of Morgan County now sitting, Gilbert Stephens, a resident of Morgan and State of Kentucky, age 74 years who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.
That he entered the Service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated that he entered the Service the -- day of September 1776 (the day of the month not recollected) under the command of Captain Gilbert Christy, Major Evan Shelby, Col. William Christy, as a volunteer under the call of this county Colonel.
We rendezvoused on the -- day of September 1776 (day of the month not recollected) at a place called Long Island on Holstein River in Washington County, Virginia. We remained two or three days at Long Island and was then marched against the Cherokee towns on the Tennessee River. We destroyed some corn and Indian huts after which we was marched back to the Long Island on Holstein River.
Discharged between the 10th and 15th of January 1777.
He again entered the Service of the United States in the -- day of June 1777 (the day of month not recollected) and rendezvoused at Washington Court House on the -- day of June 1777 (the day of the month not recollected) under Captain ---- and Colonel A Campbell.
We was immediately marched to the Long Island on Holstein River where we was stationed between two and three weeks. Thence we marched against the Cherokee towns on the Tennessee River and destroyed some Indian huts and, after having remained on the Tennessee River for some time, we was marched back to the Long Island River Holstein where we remained a short time. Then was marched to Washington Court House.
Discharged on the -- day of December 1777 (the day of the month not recollected but thinks was discharged on the 22nd December 1777).

I, W.H. Vansant, an acting Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid, do hereby certify that Nancy Stephens has been sworn to the forgoing declaration. I believe her to be 87 years old. Also I believe her to be unable to appear in Court from age and bodily infirmity. I also certify that I was acquainted with the aforesaid Nancy Stephens in the life time of her husband, Gilbert Stephens, and that they lived together as man and wife and that the said Nancy Stephens is a woman of good repute and that her oath is entitled to full faith and credit this 12th May 1854.

This day (12 May 1854) personally appeared A. Stephens, a credible witness aged 54 years the 29th of Sept. next, and after first duly sworn doth on his oath state that he has been acquainted with Nancy Stephens above named and Gilbert Stephens deceased for at least 40 years previous to the death of said Gilbert and states that the said Nancy and the said Gilbert lived together as reputed man and wife during his acquaintance up to the time of the death of the said Gilbert which was on the 16th of February 1852. And further states that the aforesaid Nancy Stephens has not again married. He states that he has no interest in the application of Nancy Stephens now being made for a pension under the act of 29 July 1848.
