Obituary of Mary Francis Newcomb Allen

Mary Newcomb Allen, 75, of Weaverville passed away Feb. 2, 2010,at her residence.

She was born Oct. 8, 1934, in Berkeley, Calif., and attended public school there.

Mrs. Allen retired to Trinity County in 1992. Traveling was one of the main interests of her life. She combined it with education, obtaining a bachelor's degree from the American University in Mexico City, spending a year in graduate studies at Stockholm University, completing a master's degree from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from London University.

She continued living and traveling abroad and worked at The Economist in London and the Atlantic Institute in Paris. She also taught graduate classes at the American University in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Allen lived in five countries over 15 years and traveled in 40 others over a lifetime. When she returned to California, she worked for 20 years at the Sea Ranch on the Sonoma coast, most of the time as project manager for the Sea Ranch developer. Until recently, she was active in the Trinity Animal Shelter Auxiliary and the Democratic Central Committee of Trinity County.

Mrs. Allen is survived by friends and numerous cousins, especially Irma Petrick of Hagerman, Idaho; and Wilma West of El Cerrito, Calif. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard; and her former husband, Phillip Allen.

No services will be held at her request.

Arrangements were handled by Forrest Funeral Home in Weaverville.
