The county records state 'September 1646, Aquila Chase and wife and David Wheeler of Hampton were presented for gathering peas on the Sabbath day.' David Wheeler was brother to Aquila Chase's wife. The story: Ann Wheeler Chase prepared a special meal, requiring peas from the garden for her husband's return. It was Sunday so gathering peas was a crime or a sin.Endnotes
