William Speedy

(1789 - February 2, 1872)

William Speedy was born in Pennsylvania in 1783, his parents are unknown and were probably from Ireland or Scotland. He was in Ohio and in the War of 1812 there. He married Elizabeth Glenn, also of Ohio in 1818, they farmed and had 6 sons. William as a widow in 1850 and by 1870 was in Shell Rock Iowa with son Manford. William lived to age 89 and is buried in at Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa.

1850 agricultural census records William’s farm. 100 acres of improved land, 100 acres of unimproved land, a cash value of $1000 and $200 worth of tools and machinery. Livestock on the farm included 5 horse, 2 milking cows, 2 cattle, 20 pigs valued at $450. the farm produced 500 bushels of wheat, 100 bushels bushels of Indian corn, 20 pounds of Irish potatoes, 300 lbs of butter, 8 tons of hay and 3 bushels of clover seed.

Burial

William is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa, plot 131 OC. William, daughter in law Annie Coates Speedy, she and Maford Speedy's children who died yooung Bertha, Blanche, Eda, Julet and William's son Clark buried in this cemetery.
