John Crandall

(1612 - 1676)

John Crandall was born in England, maybe near Wales, parents not yet known. He came to America, maybe Salem first, around 1643. He was a Baptist minister frequently jailed for his religion. In 1651 he held a religious meeting at William Witter's home and was jailed and fined along with John Clarke and Obadiah Holmes. John was married twice. He bought land from the Narragansett in about 1659, maybe bought the land with beads and trinkets. In 1991 his ancestors gave that land back to the Narragansett Tribe.
