Oscar was born in Shell Rock, Iowa and grew up on a farm. By 1890 of so he was in California working at a mineral bath in Stockton. Telephones came to Shell Rock Iowa around 1903, Oscar would have probably called home once or twice- it would have been expensive- and he would have explained to his mom and dad his job as engineer at the mineral bath.

At the Find a Grave memorial there's a description, " He has no grave marker or death certificate. His name, age, and burial spot were provided by Cathleen Boccia, an employee of the Stockton Rural Cemetery"
