The 1881 History of Elkhart County, Ind., said David Hire "is a prominent Republican, competent for almost any office in the county. He owns 80 acres of good land, but he is still somewhat in debt. He is an industrious, liberal man."

The 1881 Elkhart County history reported: "In 1862 he enlisted in Co. I, 74th Ind. Vol. Inf. and was discharged in 1865. He was in the battles of Jonesboro, Mission Ridge, etc."

Living

His occupation was given as farmer and stock raiser. Both he and his wife were reported to be members of the M.E. Church.
