James White

Beckwith's history says: "His father . . . was in the war of 1812, and was wounded from the effects of which he died. His mother . . . died when he was seven years of age, leaving him without parents or money. He engaged as cabin-boy on one of the steamers on the Chesapeake Bay for fifty cents per month. He then worked on a farm for four and five dollars per month, in Pennsylvania, and in 1859 came to Vermilion county."
