Anne Gergett is listed in the 1851 Census in William Fergie's household as his wife Janet's granddaughter, aged 4, and described as a pauper. Her brother - 2 years older than her - was also living there.
It is believed that Anne gave birth to John Logan as an unmarried mother, possibly the offspring of someone in the household where she worked as a domestic servant - we have no documented proof of this, however.
