Amos ATKINS

(Abt 1780 - )

In 1815 Gerry, Chautauqua County, New York comprised the towns of Gerry, Charlotte, Cherry Creek, and Ellington. While associated with a surveying-party Amos Atkins selected two choice lots, one for himself and one for his brother-in-law, Stephen Jones, Jr., early in 1809. Stephen Jones, Jr. and Amos Atkins names appear in land-sales records of the Holland Land Co. as original purchasers in 1809 of land in Township 3 Range 11 (Gerry). Stephen Jones settled on his land, Lot 47 and built a log house about a mile south of the present village of Sinclairville, the first habitation in the area. Amos Atkins erected a log house on his land without delay in 1809 or 1810.
From the Cyclopedia of Chautauqua County: "This year [1810] the town of Gerry was settled by Stephen Jones and Amos Atkins. They settled in the northern part of the town, near Sinclairville. William Alverson, Hezekiah Myers, Hezekiah Catlin and Porter Phelps, in 1815, made the first settlement near the village of Gerry."
