Individual Details

Amos, Sr. BROWN

(14 Apr 1767 - 21 Dec 1848)

One record has him born about 1764 in Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut.
History of Westmoreland, New Hampshire records, "Amos Brown of Manchester VT married in Westmoreland NH 13 Feb 1794 Hannah Staples b. 16 Feb 1769 (probably Bridgewater MA), daughter of Jacob Staples and Lois Edson."
In 1800 he is living in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Pre-1850 Census only lists the head of the household and age ranges and gender of the household. It appears in this census that he is living with his wife Hannah and one male and two female children. Also in 1800 he participated on June 4, 1800 and September 15, 1800 in a petition to the General Court for an incorporation of a Baptist Society in Westmoreland, inter alia. Source: The New Hampshire State Papers, Volume 13, Page 675.
In the birth record of his son Leland, it indicates Leland is his fourth child. This apparently means fourth 'living' child.
In 1810 he is living in Westmoreland. It appears in this census that he is living with his wife Hannah and four male and two female children.
In 1820 he is living in Westmoreland. It appears in this census that he is living with his wife Hannah and four male and three female children.
In 1830 he is living in Ellery, Chautauqua County, New York. It appears in this census that he is living with his wife Hannah and that his son Leland is living with him. This logic is substantiated somewhat with the knowledge that the neighbors in the 1830 and 1840 Census are very similar to the neighbors in the 1850 Census which lists Leland as the head of household.
In 1840 he is living in Ellery. It appears in this census that he is living with his wife Hannah and that his son Leland is living with him along with Leland's family of Fanny and at least their first child Marvin. There is however one other male child under six years old. This logic is substantiated somewhat with the knowledge that the neighbors in the 1840 Census are very similar to the neighbors in the 1850 Census which lists Marvin as the head of household.
