Lucy Evelyn WATERBURY
(15 Oct 1833 - 7 Mar 1908)
From the records of Waterbury descendant Michele Brooks:
"An old family story about Lucy Evelyn Waterbury follows: "[Note: about 1845] One cold winter's day in the cabin of Solomon Waterbury, his wife Charlotte Post was very sick and died. He was away, gone for help and provisions and left Lucy the oldest child about 12 years old at home with the two other children. The snow was deep and it was bitter cold. The mother died. Lucy was afraid of the Indians who were prowling around near by so she bundled up the younger ones and took the dog and left her mother dead and alone in the cabin and walked about a mile to neighbors for help. They came to her rescue.
Another family story reports that Lucy would not ride in a buggy or wagon. She always took the oxen.
Lucy was baptized 21 May 1848 in Nauvoo. It is uncertain how and why Lucy came to Nauvoo. Her mother's baptism for the dead was performed in Nauvoo...but this is confusing because in temple records, Lucy states her mother was baptized and confirmed "in church" in 1844. On 29 Jan 1850 Lucy married Stephen Wight. She was his second wife (the first had died). In the 1850 census she is listed with her new husband Stephen "White" and her brother Haskell Waterbury. The family crossed the plains with the Thomas Howell Handcart Company arriving in Salt Lake on 13 Sep 1852. In 1853 and 1856, after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Stephen took two other wives. They lived in South Millcreek until 1861 when Stephen was called to Brigham City to help colonize."
In the 1850 Census, Lucy and her husband Stephen are living in District 21, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. Living with them is her brother Haskell. Her brother Charles, at this time, is living with the Alanson Norton family from the same county.
