Individual Details
William ADKINS
( - )
From The Atkins Chronicles:
First Generation
WILLIAM Adkins.
The original Adkins immigrant ancestor is remembered only as the father of a son whose name was Josiah. Both Wetmore and Goodwin genealogies, as well as Adkins, refer to Josiah as 'the son of William Adkins of East Hartford.' Further than that they have no more to say of William, except that Arthur Carr, the Adkins chronicier, states that he may have come from Wales or elsewhere in Britain, and that he is 'our undoubted immigrant ancestor.'
It would seem that William Adkins as the immigrant and father of Josiah is a strong tradition, which in the absence of any official records there is no more reason to doubt than to believe. Whatever his name, bless him: the hand which writes, and the eyes which will read these words, could not have been without him.
William may have had another son, Thomas, who would have been brother to Josiah. He lived in East Hartford Township, Hartford County, Connecticut, and died in 1694, having outlived Josiah by four years. In his will he gave the care of his four-year-old son, Beneni, to his 'brother" Gabriel, if he please." (The name Benoni means son of my sorrows.) The other children mentioned were Mary, age 22, Thomas, age 21, William, age 19; Jane, age 16, Sarah, age 12, and Josiah, age 9."
From the Wetmore Genealogy: "William Adkins came from Wales."
