James BUTLER

( - 19 Mar 1681)

James Butler was in Lancaster, as early as 1660, had wife Mary but we do not find her maiden name. He had land set off to him and meadow, for the amount of 59.00.00 pounds estate. He also bought land of Mrs. Rebecca Joslin, widow of Thomas, in 1664, on the east of Still River, upon the east slope of Wataquadock, and there the family lived after the re-settlement of the town. James never returned after being driven out by the Indians, but died in Billerica, Mar. 19, 1681. His widow married Feb. 9, 1682, John Hinds, from Woburn, but they lived in Lancaster for several years then settled in Brookfield, Massachusetts, but Mary's son John Hinds, Jr., remained in Lancaster, now Bolton. James Butler was probably from the North of Ireland, as he is called "James Butler, sen., Irishman." John Hinds died March 1720.
