Wessels, Johannes:; burger at Stellenbosch;submits that his slave David, born here, and about 13 or 14 years old, had, for or 5 years in succession, made it a habit of absenting himself for a few days; that memorialist had adopted every method that was likely to be effective in the case of such a youngster; that however, instead of getting better, the little vagabond, 3 months ago, again ran away, and hid himself in the neighbourhood of the farms of the memorialist and Pieter van der Byl.
That after many fruitless attempts, he was at last caught by the servants of van der Byl, for having set fire to the veld, and brought to the Stellenbosch prison; that memorialist does not wish to be put to any use less expense for this......
unservicable slave; that it is to be feared that if he gets loose again, he may do more serious mischief, and that, as it appears to lie in his nature to run away, he begs the Company to accept him for nothing.
