Abraham Pietersen de Clercq (later de Klerk) is op die klein Nederlandse eilandjie Walcheren in Zeeland gebore, in die dorpie Serooskerke, oftewel Straaskerke in Zeeuws, as kind van Pieter (moontlik Pierre) de Clerck en Sara Couchet.

Abraham sluit by die Kamer van Zeeland (V.O.C.) aan as skeepsjonge. Sy funksiebeskrywing is "Jonger dan 17 jaar, allerlei karweitjes aan boord". "Karweitjes" is klein takies.Vertrek van die skip Oosterland vanuit Wielingen, tussen die eilande Walcheren en Zuid-Beveland in Zeeland, Nederland. Die Oosterland was 'n sogenaamde "spiegelretourship" - 'n seilskip vir goedere en persone. Die skip is op weg na Batavia, met 33 passasiers, waaronder 24 vlugtelinge uit Frankryk (waaronder enkele Hugenote-families wat 'n belangrijke rol sou speel in die latere geskiedenis van Suid-Afrika.) Die skeepskaptein was Karel de Marville.
