Hi,
I came across your family history files on RootsWeb / Ancestry and was
interested to see reference to a Eunice BIGHTLY married to a Melzar WELLS. In the
1850 census 69-year-old Martha Bitley is living with them.
If this is your line and you're interested in Eunice's family, I'd suggest
looking in Moreau, Saratoga Co., NY as the BITELY / BITLEY / BITELEY family
settled there before the Revolution. I suspect that Eunice is a descendent of
Peter BITELY and Martha DANIELS (who is perhaps the Martha living with them in
1850).
Dr. Asa Fitch was a self-appointed historian in Washington County, NY. In
the late 1840's - early 1850's he interviewed my gggg-grandfather, Jacob BITELY.
In this extensive interview Jacob talks about his family. Jacob had 3
brothers: John, Henry and Peter. John and Henry are buried on the old homestead in
Moreau, and Jacob is buried just across the river, south of Ft. Edward,
Washington Co., NY. Jacob tells that his brother Peter (b. Sept 1760) married a
Martha DANIELS in Mechanicsville, NY and that after he had been married a while
moved to Chittening and then to Ohio. I can't find any reference to a town of
Chittening in NY. I bet "Chittening" was actually Chittenango - in the town
of Sullivan, Madison Co., NY.
Peter Bitely appears in Moreau in the 1820 census, listed between brothers
Henry and John. A Peter Bitely (in his 60s) appears in the town of Sullivan in
the 1830 census. I see from your records that Melzar WELLS' family was in
Sullivan in 1830 as well.
