Miscellaneous

James was cycling with his daughter Lilian at the time. They were crossing the Stoke Canon Bridge when James tried to squeeze past a horse-drawn timber waggon. His arm grazed the bridge wall and he fell under the waggon wheels. James sustained a fractured right arm and right leg. A major artery was damaged in his arm which was amputated at the shoulder joint. James did not recover from the operation and died from shock. The following inquest returned a verdict of 'accidental death'.

Probate

Probate was granted to his widow Helen Leigh Phillips. His effects were valued at £705 6s. (£40,448.96 in 2005).
